During Apokries on the island birthplace of Dionysus, men load themselves with scores of heavy bells and process rhythmically through the village streets of Naxos to drive away evil spirits, and on the eve of Clean Monday white-robed torch-bearers wind down from the castle to the harbour in a ceremony of haunting beauty.
