Sandown Carnival
The Isle of Wight's carnival season opens at Sandown with a children's carnival and evening procession, the start of a summer-long circuit of illuminated parades around the Island run entirely by volunteers.
A well-worn Victorian seaside resort with a sandy bay, a genuinely well-regarded real ale pub, and the outstanding Jacobean surprise of Yaverland Manor just to the north; the town centre is frankly tatty in places, but the beach and the wider bay carry it.
